Island Games 2011

The Island Games started today (26th June) and I strolled on down into Ventnor to see the Men's Cycling.
It was a brilliant race - Nic and Kieran (from the Isle of Wight team) managed to keep on top of the game. Sadly Guernsey took gold, leaving us in 5th and 7th. However, they did extremely well, set a very good pace and entertained us all. Well done lads!

logo of the week

I was surfing the internet (on my super slick surfboard) and I found this:

The first thing I look at is the image – a cross section of a tree trunk. What tickles my interest is the footprint incorporated into the rings of the tree trunk. It is such a simple idea that really gets to the heart of what the features of woodland walks are – trees (there is lots of them) and walking! I think the autumn brown implies a muddy texture (a common trait for this particular season) that resembles the ground upon which you walk on.

The typeface looks fairly sophisticated for a walking logo, I would have expected something more rugged looking. Then again, maybe the woodland walks in Burlingham are less hilly/rough and more easy going on the feet.
I would be interested to hear from someone who lives in or around Burlingham as to what the walks are like there.

We now come to the target audience. This is just a thought: you can tell the age of a tree by how many rings it has, and with that in mind I think that the logo is aimed at people in their late 30’s to early 50’s. I am not implying that it directed at old people, it is more aimed at experienced walkers who simply wish to enjoy the pleasure of a stroll amongst the wildlife of Burlingham. This could be aimed at families, for a similar reason – they want to enjoy a lovely walk in which they can spend time together talking and possibly stop off at some point to sit down and eat the food they have brought along with them.

new station under construction

Yes, I have just started building a new train station (on Minecraft, not in real life…just wanted to clarify that). I’m not going to say to much about it other than it will be a station made up from 2 seasons (Winter and Summer). It’s in a very basic stage at the moment (as the pictures show):

Update: Just to spice things up a bit, there’s a big cave with zombies in just below the ground where I am building the station. Joy. At least there are no Creepers…

For those that don't play Minecraft (why don't you play it??), a Creeper is a mob (a monster) that blows up in your face. Basically, don't mess with them...unless you have a sword. However...

Incase that doesn't stop you sleeping tonight, try looking at them in (traditional) 3D:

In the space of a few seconds, this big old party got bigger - one more Creeper popped along. Well, it has been nice knowing you all.

So, the lesson here? Don't light a fire under a tree, the smoke from it will still set alight the leaves and spread like, well, like wild fire.

new skoda tv ad

If you have not seen it already, here is the recent Skoda Fabia VRS TV advert.

What do I like about it?
I like the fact that they have followed the original advert (remember when they build the car with cake) but with a different alternative - like an alter ego.
It is difficult to follow up a good idea with an even better one. You run the risk of your target audience saying that it is not a good as the previous one and then losing interest with the company and ultimatly decreasing sales. However, I feel that they have successfully grabed the attention of the viewer and also letting them feel part of it by making you quickly realise that you have seen the previous advert before, so you know what to expect and that it will be interesting and engaging.

What do I not like about it?
Does it do its job? Does the advert make you, the viewer, want to go out an buy the car. Firstly, who is the target audience? If it is 18 - 30 (and I would say that it is mostly aimed at men), then the car taking a persona of a living beast may be of interest. The attitude of someone who is of that age could relate to their driving attitude - a rebel, someone who wants to keep up their reputation, someone who wants to show off to their mates and look good. With that in mind, the advert is successful.
On the other hand, if the target audience is different to the one that I mentioned then the clever advertising is lost.

What inspiration can I take from this advert?
The concept and idea of how the TV advert came to be. I like the thought process - it could have gone something like thi: "Lets create a wacky follow up to our cake car advert that is totally the opposite in looks and feel of our previous idea!"
Do not be afraid to follow up ideas and create something fun! But always keep in mind your target audience.

Recently, I went on holiday with my family to Wales. Before we made our journey up, I was was loaned my Dad’s old camera to play/experiment with.

This is one of the first ones I took. The blur was created on purpose and I then added sepia effect.
The feeling that I was initially trying to convey was something similar to that uncertain (but not lost) feeling you get when exploring a new place – you do not know where you are or where you are heading. For all you know you could well be in a parallel universe or drifting off into fantasy land…

This photograph is, well…one that I like. Why? I like trains (shame it does not transform and walk about the place).

When playing with the camera, I experimented with the shutter speed. These photos are just 2 of results – the top one appearing darker with less motion whilst the bottom one appearing to be lighter and the track having more of a blur to it (it almost makes you motion sick).

Lastly, here is a view from the top of a mountain we climbed as proof that we did it – what a mission that was! Great fun though, very exhilarating…

I’ve been trying out new materials...food! No, not potato printing. I’ve be making the food – I did a five day evening course spread over five weeks. It was good fun, intense and the pace picked up half way through. Anyway, enough of the talking, lets see some of the pictures.

11th doctor, 11th logo

That's right, the TV show Doctor Who as a new logo to go with the new Doctor, his new companion and new TARDIS. It's all a bit crazy, but before we look at it, lets take a look at the previous logos:

Some great classics there. I don't know about you, but I remember a few of those (good times). So, the new one will appear in 2010 when series 5 starts. Here, have a look:

It certainly is different compared to the other 10. Do I like it? I'm not sure yet, it needs to sink in a bit more I feel. My initial thoughts are mostly positive - it is fresh (for today's standards), simple and it captures the main icon of the TV show...the TARDIS. If I were to re-design the logo, a good and strong starting point would be the TARDIS since most people associate it with the program. I am sure that at some point we (Doctor Who fan's) have doodled a blue box in our sketch/note books...come on, who hasn't.

Anyway, moving on swiftly. As you saw, a new font has been used - it looks like that it has specifically been created for the TV show. It is bold and oddly enough looks like a development from an older version of the Doctor Who font. The kerning is good, although there is a lot of space either side of the letter 'T', but that does not seem to matter much when you look at it as a whole. They have also applied a metal grain to the larger letters. I'm not entirely sure why, to be honest I thought they would add a grain that gave the appearance to that of wood. This would be more in keeping with the theme of the TARDIS, after all, the shell of it is made from wood. The colours fit in well with the feel of the police box - blue being the dominant colour and the silver kind of feel throws in that futuristic element. Good or not? The TV show does use technology that would appear as if it were of the future but yet there is a down to earth feel that is embedded into our minds.

The video clip shown of the new logo would work well as an ident I think. What do I mean by this? I can give you two examples: my ITV2 project was aimed at creating a new identity, so you can see this on my blog by searching the archive which appears in the column on the left. The other example is this:

I think that the Doctor Who advertising team for the BBC should create an ident for the new series as it would add a cunning spin to television viewing as well as it advertising the the show will be on. Failing that, they could just use the new one that they have just created (as seen in the second video clip).

I feel that I should bring this post to a close now...

A friend on my course showed me this music video. It is a song about the Isle of Wight (IOW), honestly, it is.

I can see a great opportunity for this video to be used as a piece of advertising material for the IOW - it could appear on TV or something. However, I would cut it down a bit, add in some slow motion views (a pan of the lovely hills, sea or even steam engines) and stick on some branding.

I think my work here is done.

letterpress

Today was an interesting day at uni, we were learning to use the letterpress. The initial setup is shown in the following photos. First you get a 'chase' (the metal frame) and place characters and/or numbers in it. Then you fix it in position using 'furniture' and finally you make sure that none of the pieces fall out.

Once the 'chase' is has been filled (as above) it is then called a 'form'. You then lay it on a letterpress machine, apply paint, cover it and then press it so that you get the following outcome:

This is one of my first rough tests. Obviously, if I pursue this method further I will change the type so that it isn't so random. This was just for test purposes only.

I know I have only quickly covered the whole process, some stages have been skipped. However if you wish to find out more there is a book by David Jury called Letterpress (I'm intending to find it at my uni library).

Hey, it's a rocket! Sadly, no - a stone one would not be able to take off. This is know as the Pepper Pot, which is a lighthouse (according to my Dad).

This may look and seem pointless to you but I was quite intrigued by the tangled mess of blanches and how they all dived and ducked in and out of each other.

Basically, they are edible stirring sticks (generally used with hot drinks). The product itself is alright I suppose - there's not much to them to be honest.

The name (Mikado) originates from the classic game of pick-up sticks (hence the stick like look). As for the packaging, it's fairly simple really...make a great graphic design project. I think the box could possibly be improved...

Being that I have an interest in Doctor Who (science fiction in general), I am surprised that I didn't put these bits of work up earlier.

As you can see, they were created in Maya (a 3D modeling and animation piece of software). It's great fun to use Maye to create models. It's like when you used to play with modeling clay when you were younger (unless you're Nick Park), accept this is on a computer. However, clay is not to be shunned - it is still great to play with and useful for projects.

Firstly, I would like to say happy new year to those reading. Hope you have had a good time over the last few weeks or so.

To start of 2009, I am going to show you an interesting title sequence from Dancing on Ice. I know what you are thinking, "Why would John watch that program?" Lets not go in to details. I like this intro because of the Matrix style at has at the end (you will see what I mean when you watch it). You might think the idea is old...well, I don't. It's not commonly used in the TV industry and it is not easy (by that I mean cheap) to produce. Look closely at it (pause it if you wish). When the shot rotates, everything moves in the correct way...

I have yet another animation to show you (you can see a theme running here). This time, it is related to one of my projects. I am currently working with origami and whilst I was doing some research and trying to find helpful guides on YouTube, I found an animated bird that folded up and flew off. It is very well done as they have included a background and shadow that are not actually there. This is done using a blue or green screen. However, the guy/girl in the video has just simply covered the place in blue paper - a much cheaper (DIY) method.
Anyway, check it out, it is interesting.

It's Crazy Time

Guess what I haven't done in a while? No, not that. Yeah, post up something. Now that my blog is fully up and running, it's time to get down to some serious stuff and some crazy creative things - this is what I intend to show you each day. Tonight I will show you something I found on YouTube. It's something that I'm certainly interested in. The method is know as stop frame animation. Before I explain, have a look:

The person who created this has basically taken the toy, moved bits of it a small amount and taken a photo (well, that's one way of doing it that I know of). This process is then repeated again and again and again and again and again and so on, until it is finished. It is a long process, but can be very calming. Shocking, I know, but it really can be, I've done it before.
The reason why I like this (apart from the toy being from a certain film that I really like) is that the method is unique and you don't always see this in a lot of places. I just find it really interesting. You may disagree. If you did like it, here is another one for you to check out:

Yes, time. Where does it all go? As you can see, I'm not doing very well posting daily, but I will continue to try to...and I should probably stop doing this late at night...
Anyway, this week at uni has been an interesting one, it has been called 'Words Week'. Does what it says on the tin - it's about a week of words. It has been very interesting and hands-on, which I like. I've attended the following:

Chermayeff workshop
Calligraphy workshop
Letterpress demo (and tidy up)
'Every Word Counts' talk
Watched the Helvetica film
Trip to the British Library

All that was from monday to wednesday. I also went to the Museum of Childhood as part of my research for my self written project (swp). This was quite interesting as I saw some old classic toys, such as my Dad's scalectrix. Good times.

I'm going to cut things short now as it's 11:20pm and I'm tired and have lots of work to do tomorrow. So, here are some that have alternate meanings that you may not have known:
Squirm - A worm that has a square shaped body.
Light-saber - Name given to a light footed saber tooth tiger.
Fugut - A rare fungus plant that has it's organs on the outside
Badger - A really really bad germ.
Clone - A clown doing an act all on their own.
Thunderbirds - A flock of birds that can survive flying through a thunder storm.
Padlock - An Irish canal worker.
Tanana - An ingredient consisting of a bananas that are used to create a fake tan.
Burine - A rare metal made from compressed wee over thousands of years.

Today, today, today. Today has been yet another busy day of uni work and helping out at my local church. We had a free student meal running (wahoo!) and it went pretty well. I was talking to some new students, which was quite interesting (as I got to know a bot more about them). I got talking to one of the elders. Now, this is a rare occasion because each one of them is always dodging and diving around (they are busy people). It was good fun talking with them.

Something a bit random and different - I was watching TV this morning before I left and I saw these:

Yeah, these things can actually fly. They are sooo cool, they can take off, hover(!), descend and turn left and right with fixed forward movement. They also have infra red lasers on them...so that you can shoot the other person down! I just think it's really awesome that you can make them hover - sooooo much fun!

Yes, I finally have a blog (for now). You're probably asking "Why do you have a blog John?" Well, the aim of this is to keep you updated on the latest goings on. Ok, so I have MSN and Facebook, but you can't really keep someone informed about yourself as well as a blog (you can to a certain extent). Anyway, I don't have time to say much as I have lots of work to do.
